Overview

Math fact practice, turned into a pet race.

A new Prodigy learning tool that helps Grade 1–3 students build fast, confident recall of math facts.

  • 240+ levels a year, matched to each student’s level.

  • 7 zones, each with its own story beats, narration, and boss fight.

  • 70+ pets, each with a unique look and animations.

Context and goals

Practice that feels like play — and proves real progress.

Fluency practice is repetitive by nature, and young learners lose motivation fast when drills feel like tests. The challenge: make daily practice exciting enough to come back to, keep every session short and focused, and give students a clear picture of how they are growing.

  • Narrative moments: A story-driven experience with Ulla, the Puppet Master, and a cast of zone characters gives every race a reason.

  • Emotional rewards: Trophies, mystery eggs, mastery badges, and weekly leader medals celebrate effort and give kids something to look forward to tomorrow.

  • Gameplay variations: Races against bosses bring variety to the journey.

Core loop

One loop, built for short daily sessions.

Each session is a single race: three laps of math facts with instant feedback, followed by a celebration and a clear look at progress. Rewards that unlock tomorrow give kids a reason to come back.

  1. Journey map: Pick a level on the map, check the class high scores, and hit Play.

  2. Get ready: A short countdown sets the pace: Lap 1… GO!

  3. Race the facts: Answer on a big number pad. Quick, correct answers push your pet ahead.

  4. Race complete: Score, max streak, time and any new badges — celebrated on the podium.

  5. Rewards: Find a mystery egg that hatches tomorrow — a reason to come back.

  6. Fluency results: A 13×13 grid shows every fact as correct, incorrect, fluent or not yet practiced.

Eggs hatch the next day — so the loop starts again tomorrow, right back on the journey map.

The race

Every answer moves your pet forward.

The race screen pairs one fact at a time with a big, forgiving number pad. Feedback is instant: quick, correct answers send your pet sprinting, and the lap bar makes progress through the race visible at a glance.

  • One fact in focus: A single, oversized fact laid out like it would be on paper — nothing else competes for attention.

  • Thumb-sized number pad: Large keys with a clear button keep input fast and forgiving for small hands on tablets.

  • Lap progress: The lap bar tracks the race in real time, so kids always know how far they have to go.

  • Live racing pets: Quick, correct answers speed your pet up against rival racers — motivation without a timer in your face.

Journey map

Every school year begins a new journey.

When the school year starts, students set off on a fresh path across the map. Every node is a level — trophies mark what’s complete, locks hint at what’s next, and pet rewards, eggs and bosses keep the adventure going all year. Badges and the Stable are always one tap away.

Students in a class see their own best score and the class top 3. If the teacher turns the leaderboard off — or names are hidden — only the student’s own high score appears.

Racing Worlds

Seven zones, one continuous journey.

The journey map runs through themed biomes — from glowing forests to frozen peaks, lava spires, sandy shores and towers above the clouds. Each zone pairs its own map art with a matching race track and a resident character.

Built in layers

Every race track is assembled from reusable layers.

Race backgrounds are built from parallax layers — sky, hills, treetops, ground and a foreground strip. The structure stays the same in every biome, so each new world reuses it with fresh art.

Progress and results

A fluency grid that shows exactly what each student knows.

After every race, the results screen maps math facts in a 13×13 fluency grid. Students can see which facts are mastered, which need more practice, and which are still ahead. Rewards earned during the race appear alongside the grid.

  • Fluent: Recalled quickly and accurately — this fact is mastered.

  • Correct: Answered correctly this race; speed is still building.

  • Incorrect: Missed this time, highlighting what to practice next.

  • Not yet practiced: Facts the student has not reached yet.

Story and onboarding

A story that gives every race a reason.

The first-time experience opens at Ulla’s house, where all of Prodigy’s pet eggs are cared for. Students choose their first racing pet — and then the Puppet Master swoops in and steals the eggs. To win them back, you race. Narrative moments are short, skippable and voiced by characters kids will meet again across the zones.

Meet the cast

Every zone has Zones with something to say — giving each new set of levels its own personality.

  • Slime Guard — Bonfire Spire

  • Bok — Shiverchill

  • Eve Windsail — Shipwreck Shore

  • Eugene Gramps — Skywatch

  • Storm Warden — Dragon Isle

Mystery eggs

Today’s race, tomorrow’s surprise.

Finishing a race can drop a mystery egg. A roulette reveals which one, a timer label promises it will hatch tomorrow, and the next visit opens with a single, irresistible action: tap the egg. The reveal names your new pet and sends it straight to the Stable.

Non-members hatch the next day; membership unlocks hatching and racing anytime.

Mastery badges

Badges for real mastery — one fact set at a time.

Badges are earned by fluency, not by time played. Each one maps to a fact set — like addition sums up to 5, 10, 18 and 24 — and unlocks only when every fact in that set is fluent. A Badges book on the map shows what is claimed and what is still in progress.

Weekly leaders

Friendly competition that resets every week.

Each week the class leaderboard resets. A big Weekly Leaders button on the map announces the results, the top three earn a Weekly Leader badge with its own celebration, and because it can be collected again and again, every new week is a fresh chance.

Pet collection

70+ pets to hatch, race and collect.

Every hatched pet joins the Stable — a collection that turns steady practice into something kids are proud to show off. Pick any pet to race next.

Design system

A tactile, toy-like UI kit.

One visual language runs through the race, rewards, badges and leaderboards: chunky three-layer buttons, warm parchment panels and bright, meaningful color. Everything is a component with states and variants, ready for development hand-off.

Typography

Typefaces

The typefaces build on the core Prodigy World design system, extending the same playful, approachable visual language across the Math Facts experience.

Paytone One is used for titles, celebrations, numerals, math facts, and calls to action. ABeeZee supports lap counters, legends, dialogue, and helper text.

Color

Color that kids can read instantly.

Actions use a small, consistent set of button colors so young players learn their meaning fast. World colors set the mood of each moment, and four fluency states power the results grid.

Components and patterns

Components with every state designed.

Buttons, keys, toggles, panels and race widgets are built as variant sets — default, hover, pressed and disabled — so engineering gets exact specs and new features assemble quickly.

Icons and game objects

Game objects that reward at a glance.

Trophies, pedestals, medals and map icons share one illustrated style: thick outlines, soft highlights and metal tiers that kids already understand — gold, silver, bronze.
